Friday, October 24th, 2008

I finally got to go and check out Hot Ink at the Minnesota Museum of American Art. It was pretty great. The huge banner is awesome.

Here’s a photo I took right before I was informed that I’m not allowed to take photos in the museum.

For some reason the state capital building was green. Maybe they just really like St. Patrick’s Day.

“Vacation”

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Well, I’m back from SPX, and as promised, here are some photos:

Sarah and I spent a great deal of time waiting around in airports over the course of last week. That mostly mean lots of overpriced martinis and arcade games. It was actually pretty fun.

Wild horses couldn’t have kept us from being that close to the Lincoln Memorial without paying our respect.

Big Brother and his wonderful wife, Susan, put us up for the week. On a good day I can walk and chew gum at the same time; my brother manages to fight terrorism for the government AND make a really good Manhattan.

And then SPX! It was a great show. I would definitely go again. My favorite book from the show was The Man Who Loved Breasts by Robert Goodin. Just laugh out-loud funny.

Saturday night we had dinner with the One Percent Press clan.

Then I went back to the hotel, drank a barrel of whiskey and stayed up until 2 a.m. talking comics. I’ll spare you the photos in leu of this image of a herd of alpacas.

Yes, that’s right. Earlier in the week we went to an alpaca farm.

Vacations kick ass.

FallCon Trading Cards

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Every October we have a comic convention here in Minnesota called FallCon. Well this year will be the 20th anniversary of this convention. To celebrate, the organizers sent out 5 blank cards for people to draw on which will be auctioned off at the show. I’m pretty sure they went out to anyone who has ever had a table at FallCon.

Sarah and I both received a set of the trading card sized blank canvases. And since neither her or I are going to be able to attend (FallCon is the same weekend as SPX this year) we wanted to do something fun.

Basically we collaborated on one big drawing and screen printed it across all the cards at once.

They remind me of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cards I collected as a kid. There would always be a string of cards that would be just a part of a bigger image, and you had to collect them all to see the full picture.

Oh, and did I mention that the bright violet ink that Synthetic Sunshine chose to print the cards glows under a black light?

Collect them all this October 4th and 5th!

Zinefest

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Well, Zinefest is fast approaching. It’s shaping up to be a pretty fun event thanks to the hard work of the lovely Sarah Morean.

Here are some photos of the show that will be up during the event. It’s a retrospective of sorts of the Minneapolis Zine scene. All of these zines came from the collection of Mr. Mike. We have some old zines from Zac Sally, Mr. Mike and the Newsletter of Artistic Influence. I used to read the Newsletter back when I was in college and it’s fun to see so many of them lined up on the wall. It serves as a kind of timeline for my freshman – sophomore year.

So anyway, stop by the Stevens Square Center for the Arts this upcoming weekend. The event is on July 12 and 13.
